Interlibrary Loan Policies

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is defined as items borrowed from another library and circulated locally. The following policies may not apply to items borrowed through your shared system.

Routing (non WISCAT software) ILL Requests

* Clear your library and your shared system if applicable.
* Search WISCAT and create ILL request.
* Send requests directly to IFLS via fax, email, or courier.
* IFLS will clear the Indianhead system and refer to other Wisconsin libraries, WILS, and MINITEX.
 * IFLS clearinghouse will refer out-of-state as needed.

IFLS will not refer requests for materials published/released in the last four months outside of the Indianhead system.
Libraries using the WISCAT ILL software may have different procedures; check with the IFLS interloan office if need WISCAT training and/or have questions about the routing of ILL requests.

Renewals

Requests for renewals of ILL materials are discouraged, but completely at the discretion of the lender. Many libraries will renew if you request via WISCAT or call directly. IFLS can renew materials from MORE libraries.

Overdue Fines

Charge the same fines that you would charge for in-house materials. Suggested standard is $1.00 per day for videos; $.10 per day for other materials; $5.00 maximum per item.

Lost Materials

The Borrowing Library is always responsible for the cost of borrowed ILL materials. Actual cost for lost materials is billed by the lending library. Contact the library.

Filing

If keeping paper files, consider filing pending interlibrary loan requests by title. If materials are received with no paperwork, the requests will be easier to find.
